Benjamin Garcia is a Mexican-American poet from the Navajo Nation, modern-day New Mexico, who discusses gender, queerness, and immigrant rights in his poetry. Garcia received his BA from the University of New Mexico and his MFA from Cornell University. In addition to being a poet, Garcia currently works as a Sexual Health and Reproduction Educator in the Finger Lakes Region of New York. On his website, Garcia writes that he “believes that addiction is a mental health issue, not a criminal one.” In 2019, Benjamin was commended as a Lamdba Literary Fellow. His newest poetry collection, Thrown in the Throat, published by Milkweed Editions in 2019, has been widely praised in such publications as Milkweed Editions and Frontier Poetry and is a Boston Globe best book of 2020.
